The 2013 Group One Caulfield Cup has been won by Fawkner, delivering prominent Australia owner Lloyd Williams a maiden victory in the event.

Finishing too strongly for international hope Dandino and local-favourite Dear Demi, Fawkner’s victory delivered a maiden victory in the highly sought-after race not only to Williams, but also jockey Nick Hall and leading trainer Robert Hickmott.

With the possibility of fielding up to seven runners in the Caulfield Cup, the Williams team elected to only enter Fawkner in the week leading up to jump, who was able to more than live up to expectations.

Despite never previously running at 2400m competitively, Fawkner showed consistent form leading into the Caulfield Cup, running a strong fifth in the Group One George Main Stakes behind Streamer, as well as an impressive third in the Group One Turnbull Stakes only two weeks ago.

Lloyd Williams’ son Nick was always confident the classy grey would run a strong race, and highlighted what it meant to his camp at the day’s conclusion.

“We are pretty big on setting horses for their grand finals and this was this horse’s grand final, as he’s done a great job” Williams said.

“I think this is the hardest race to win in Australia. It’s a lot harder to get a horse to the Melbourne Cup, but just by nature of the way this race is run. It’s a very hard race to win.

“We have had a lot of runners in it over the years and it’s just great that we’ve been able to win it. I’m sure all the Australian breeders will be happy because we’ve managed to do it with an Australian horse. He is now the best son of our horse Reset” Williams concluded.

Outside chance Jet Away, ridden by Damien Oliver led the field into the final run home, but an inspired ride from Nick Hall between runners saw the classy colt claim a one-and-a-quarter length victory, fifth favourite at Paddy Power Paddy Power pre-race.

It now appears Fawkner has completed his 2013 Australian Spring Racing Carnival Campaign, however connections are yet to rule anything out.
